A 22-year-old hiker was rescued after suffering from an ankle injury in Eaton Canyon Sunday evening.

A 22-year-old hiking in Eaton Canyon was airlifted Sunday evening after injuring his ankle, according to Lisa Derderian, spokeswoman for the Pasadena Fire Department.

The hiker called for help shortly after 5 p.m. between the first and second waterfalls in Eaton Canyon. Search and rescue teams arrived on the scene 45 minutes later, and airlifted the hiker to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries were not known, Derderian said.

Rescuers escorted the hiker's three companions out of the canyon in a mission that took about three hours, Derderian added.

Making the trek to the second waterfall in Eaton Canyon is a scenic but dangerous hike. The highest volume of Altadena Search and Rescue calls appear to come from Eaton Canyon, .

Earlier this month two hikers were rescued near the falls .

Authorities warn hikers to know the hazards that they could face, including steep, dizzying ridges and unpredictable water levels depending on the time of year.
