Updated: Man Believed to Have Jumped to His Death onto 210 Freeway

Authorities are investigating the death of a man who appears to have leaped onto the 210 Freeway early Friday.

Updated: 1:26 p.m. Authorities identified the deceased as Kirk Allan Spiegel, 49. Information released Friday morning from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department placed the body on the 210 Freeway at Ocean View Boulevard. But Lt. Angela Shepherd of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Department said it appeared the man jumped from the 2 Freeway overpass onto the 210 Freeway, as the body was found below the overpass.

Earlier: Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating the death of a man who appears to have jumped onto the freeway early Friday morning in La Cañada Flintridge.

It looks as though the man lept onto the 210 Freeway, said Lt. Angela Shepherd of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

Deputies arrived at the scene just before 4 a.m., where the man was pronounced dead.

Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the L.A. County Department of Coroner said the man looks to be in his 40s, but is awaiting next of kin notification before he can release the man's identity. Winter called it a possible suicide, as he has not seen a police report.

"You don't know if someone saw him climb up there and jump or if he was with friends and fell, you just don't know,'' he said.

The CHP closed the freeway while invesitgators examined the scene, but reopened it a short while later, Shepherd said. It did not appear traffic was affected due to the early hour.
