Updated: Pomona Man Killed in Deputy-Involved Shooting in Altadena

The shooting took place Friday night near the intersection of Lake and New York.

One man was killed Friday night in an officer-involved shooting around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Lake Avenue and New York Drive.

The shooting occurred after a routine traffic stop, according to Capt. Ray Leyva of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The name of the man who was shot and killed is Stephen Bullock, 33, of Pomona, according to Lt. Dietz of the County Coronoer's Office.

During the stop, Bullock exited from the passenger side of the vehicle and took off running, Leyva said.

The deputies followed him on foot and were able to catch up to him, he added.  The man struggled with police and was fighting them, Leyva added.

During the scuffle, Bullock reached into his waistband and pulled out a gun.  A deputy or deputies opened fire on him.

Bullock, was pronounced dead at the scene and a gun was recovered, Leyva said.

He did not get off a shot and no officers at the scene were harmed.

As of Saturday morning, the bureau is not releasing the name of the deputy involved in the case.

The shooting Saturday is the latest in a streak of violence in the last week in Altadena and Pasadena that has claimed two lives and resulted in two more being wounded by gunfire.

Standard procedure following a deputy involved shooting is for separate investigations to be conducted by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, District Attorney's Office and the internal affairs unit of the Sheriff's Department.  Investigators from the county Office of Independent Review are also granted access to crime scene evidence in the event that they are requested to do an investigation.

Updated 11:40 a.m:  Jose Gonzales, 20, a clerk working at the Arco station on the corner of Lake and New York, said he saw the police pull up Friday night but didn't hear or see the shooting.

Gonzales, who worked the late night shift into the morning, said he didn't think anything of it since police frequently do stops in the area during the night.

Later officers came into the station to ask if anybody had witnessed the shooting, he said.

He said he was in the back of the store at the time of the shooting.

Police investigators were at the scene all night, and didn't leave until 8 a.m., Gonzales added.

Updated 11:55 a.m: Sheriff's deputies at the homicide bureau and at the Altadena Sheriff's Station say they are unsure whether the driver of the vehicle was arrested or not.

Updated 2:01 p.m: Coroner's officials have identified the shot man as Stephen Bullock, 33, of Pomona.

Updated 3:27 p.m: According to a search of county court records, a man named Stephen Bullock born in the same year as the slain Altadena man has multiple convictions of the vehicle code including drunk driving.  He also has convictions for drug possesion, as well as a conviction for battery in 2001.

Updated 6:35 p.m: According to Lt. Joseph Dempsey of the Altadena Sheriff's Station, the driver of the car was questioned and released, and has not been arrested.

He also added that the deputy who shot Bullock is a department veteran and has been working out of the Altadena station for a fairly long time.
