Roadside Memorial Honors Woman Hit and Killed by Vehicle on Woodbury Rd.

Mercedes Rivas died after suffering injuries as a pedestrian on June 27, according to the CHP.

A roadside memorial of flowers, candles and photos has been placed at the northeast corner of E. Woodbury Road and N. Marengo Ave. in Altadena, honoring a woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle there.

According to an officer with the California Highway Patrol's Ataldena station, Rivas was struck on June 27 while walking near the intersection, which is close to the border with Pasadena. The officer, who asked not to be named, said Rivas survived the initial incident and was taken to a local hospital. According to a note left at the memorial, Rivas died on June 29, two days after being hit.

After noticing the memorial, Patch could find no reports on the death by any local news outlets or published obituaries. The CHP officer explained that the agency would typically send out a press release about a pedestrian death, but because Rivas survived for several days, the information wasn't passed along to the Public Affairs office.

The CHP officer said the investigation into her death is ongoing, so little information can be released publicly. He did add that there was nothing in the file to indicate it was a criminal investigation, and that by all accounts it appears to have been an accident.

The type of vehicle and driver involved in the collision is not publicly available at this time, and we have been unable to determine Rivas' hometown or age, although she appears in the photo to be a young woman in her 20s or 30s.
