Updated: Suspect in Altadena Shooting Arrested

Sheriff's Deputies located and arrested suspect without incident.

Updated:  Patrol deputies working in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Ventura Street have arrested the suspect in yesterday's shooting. According to a release from the Sheriff's Department, the deputies made contact with the suspect, Kanan Traub, and he was arrested without incident.

Original: Sheriff's investigators are searching for an 18-year-old male who vanished after witnesses said he was involved in a shooting in Altadena Tuesday.

Deputies surrounded a home near Lincoln Avenue and Mariposa Street where they believed an Altadena man had barricaded himself following a shooting in the area Tuesday afternoon.

After several hours passed in the presumed standoff, investigators sent in a camera-equipped robot and discovered that the suspect was not at the location.

Detectives are now asking the public for help in finding the suspect, who was identified as Kanan Traub of Altadena, Lt. Eric Lasko of the Altadena Sheriff's Station told Patch Wednesday.

Traub is described as a white male standing 5-foot-11-inches tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. He has a criminal record and investigators are trying to determine if he is a member of a local gang, Lasko said.

A photo of Traub was not immediately available Wednesday afternoon but Lasko said one would hopefully be released to the public by the end of the day.

No victims have been identified in the shooting, Lasko said.

"We haven't confirmed that someone's been shot, we've confirmed that someone was shot at," he said. "No one has come forward with any gunshot wounds."

Actually, I'd spend more time worried about learning how to read and write English if English was my first language and I spoke and wrote it that poorly.

I fear the public is in grave danger consdering the way the sherrif's dept has handled this matter or should I say mishandled? A 10 hr standoff with an empty house? I can only think about the cost of the helicopters two of them that hovered overhead for hours an the cost of the officers (two shifts) and of course the serious inconvience to my neighbors, some of whom had to wait more than ten hours to walk a block to there homes while the sherrif's dept is sitting, chatting, drinking coffee, eating donuts and being paid to watch an empty house of a subject they know an can apprehend at anytime. It appears to me the agency is bilking the system. I hope nothing more serious ever happens in our lovely neighborhood. II this is the way the sherrif's office handles things we will be in trouble! How am I racist yeeha? Telling people who are most likely born and raised in the country to learn their own language? Jeez son. Presume guilt? I have no clue what you're talking about. Pretty sure you don't either. Um, well, it's obvious you don't.

I've seen that kid around and I know what he's capable of. No one should defend him. I have been told he has shot at ppl before and he is so disrespectful. He has no respect for anyone but his crip friends. I hope the sherriff's catch him and put him away for a long time. That kid is always up to no good.

The best thing to do is: 1. Don't do things that make people want to shoot you. 2. Don't shoot at people. Victim or not, gun play is unacceptable. PERIOD.

Readers, note I've deleted two comments for Terms of Service violations. A reminder, again, that using obscenities or directing insults at other readers violates our terms of service, even if you blank out part of the insult so you don't write the full word. These rules are pretty simple to follow - you can disagree with what people say, just don't call them names or use obscene language and you are all set.

There was a police barricade on Fair Oaks at Mariposa as well. I wonder if that was the same incident or another.

I am glad that the Sheriff responded quickly and was able to quickly locate the suspect and make the arrest.

Two thumbs up Lovely. Especially #1 LOL! I needed that laugh especially because I forgot the next morning that I had to walk to my car down the street and was late to work!

Thank you Dan, I really appreciate that. It takes away from the seriousness of our little newsletter. Thank you for staying on top of things of this nature!

Seriously!!! Generally people don't come to your home and try to shoot you for no reason!! It's like the last time someone got killed at a liquor store on Fair Oaks and someone said he was "At the wrong place at the wrong time." No he wasn't: 1. He had done something to really piss someone off. 2. He was at a liquor store where other people have been KILLED. (guess the liquor store is always the WRONG PLACE) No surprises here.

I'm in total agreement with Charles, this incident was TOTALLY mishandled by the Altadena Sheriffs Deputies. Their response was ridiculously outlandish! What a waste of taxpayers money - helicopter flying for hours (wonder how much it cost to fill that birdie up seeing that gasoline prices are skyrocketing) - Sheriff's deputies from other stations called in - REALLY!! - I'm sure that the 100's of Sheriff's called in that night were happy for the overtime - Can we find out the exact $ amount this little fiesco cost the taxpayers? They knew who they were looking for, and they knew that he isn't hard like that - but a person has a right to defend their - protect themselves; The way these pasadena ppl r coming up to Altadena trying to hunt someone to shoot & kill - I might have to go buy my 13 a gun and take him to the shooting range to learn how to shoot, because I'm going to tell him, if anybody shoot at you then u shoot back at they ass to kill....How bout that????????????? This Altadena Patch has turned into a tabloid

I'm glad the sheriffs finaly found a suspect because these altadena shootings r getting out of hand. Altadena is turning into a little ghetto. Ppl are claiming these streets and so called hoods instead of getting out there and getting a REAL job or Education. And truth be told altadena belongs to the LA County sheriffs not these young street thugs. Because at the end of the day there the ones hiding like scared little babies while r Altadena Sheriffs still serve patrol and protect. Wake up and smell the coffee and remember whose side your own, young criminals or the ones who serve and protect everyone not just those who wear blue???Food for thought

I saw the video that was on youtube about that out to dinner game and it scares me to know that they made that video where they pulled out guns and I hope there was no children around there why aren't sherrifs investigating that

I think the deputies did a great job. They pulled resources from other stations to secure the neighborhood (which probably saves this station overtime $$). When they searched the suspect's house where he was last seen, and didn't find him, they closed up shop and opened up the neighborhood back up. The bottom line is they ensured that nobody got hurt by this gunman. And they caught him the next day. Great job!
Lisa Hastings October 13, 2012 at 04:03 PM
Next time the Sheriff should just stay at the station and let the gang bangers take over the neighborhood. Then let's see what kind of intelligent complaints all the smart people on this blog will have.
yeahian October 13, 2012 at 10:12 PM
okay just to play devils advocate they surrounded a unnocuppied house for x amount of hrs. they couldn't find this guys cell # and geolocate him? That may have taken a bit to get a warrant but. I mean who said he was in there does that guy still have a job. just sayin. Also is there a update is this guy out on bail in county have charges been filed?

https://local.nixle.com/alert/4897053/ traub was identified on here prior to the police identifying him it seems
Whole Bean October 14, 2012 at 02:39 AM
They surrounded a house that they had good information from witnesses that he went into the house. He was last seen armed with an automatic weapon. I don't know about you, but I don't think fine upstanding citizens walk around shooting at people with an automatic weapon. The cops needed to do everything they could to assure the safety of the community. They did an outstanding job!
yeahian October 14, 2012 at 05:36 AM
check the facts man
Dinky Girl October 15, 2012 at 03:41 PM
I would agree with that if they didn't allow people to WALK around, unarmed and helpless but they couldn't drive to thier homes. Otherwise I agree that they were there to follow a lead and closed off the streets in a timely manner, took a little longer than I would like, but overall ...it really did take too long.
Lisa Hastings October 15, 2012 at 05:09 PM
Next time the Sheriff should take a few of the "experts" on this blog with them to direct the operation and make sure that the capture of the suspect doesn't take too long or cause too much inconvenience.
