Suspicious Package at Fire Station Examined Sunday Night

The package arrived at the Altadena Fire Station on Sunday night, getting the attention of authorities. It was later found to contain fertilizer.

Firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and a Hazmat team spent about an hour Sunday night determining the dangerous potential of a box dropped off at the Altadena Fire Station on El Molino Avenue, a box that was later discovered to house only fertilizer.

“The fire station requested our assistance,” said Sgt. Tracy Stewart of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Basically, we stood by while the fire department’s Hazmat team examined the box and later rendered it safe.”

According to City News Service, a call came in regarding the package at 9:30 p.m. Sunday night and later taken away at 10:30 p.m.

Lt. Robert Bloom of the told City News that the package was taped shut, and that the arson and explosives team used an x-ray to examine the item before taking it away.

"It turned out to be potassium nitrate -- fertilizer,'' Bloom said. "The hazardous materials team took it away. Someone had brought it to the fire station to dispose of, but they should have waited until someone was there."
