Update: Cause and Damages of the Fire at Jack Scott's Home Identified

Los Angeles County Fire Department ruled out arson as the cause of the fire.

The cause of the that destroyed parts of the home of former State Senator, Jack Scott was reportedly electrical and accidental.

"The fire spread from a hollow wall space and travelled to the attic. It's not sure if the fire was caused by Christmas lights," Inspector Quvondo Johnson of the L.A. County Fire Department said.

The damages caused by the fire amount to $600,000.  Scott's house sustained a structural loss of $500,000 and loss of contents--including furniture and other items inside the house--of $100,000.

Scott, who is also Chancellor of the California Community Colleges, maintained a positive outlook despite the fire.

"These things happen. It's a blessing that no one was injured or killed," he said.

The Scotts plan to restore the house they've lived in for 23 years to its previous condition.  

"It'll be six months to a year before we can fully occupy the house," he said.
