Firefighters battling the Williams Fire in the Angeles National Forest have the brush fire 83 percent contained Sunday.
At sunrise, the fire had scorched 4,192 acres, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Full containment was expected next Thursday.
Firefighters Sunday worked to construct and improve containment lines around the Williams Fire, which began around 2:15 p.m. last Sunday, in the midst of a Labor Day weekend crowd. The fire broke out in the Camp Williams trailer park off San Gabriel Canyon Road.
The fire has been burning to the north and east in steep terrain, fueled by medium to heavy brush that has been untouched by fire for 15 to 20 years, officials said. They said 516 firefighters were deployed.
On Thursday morning, deputies escorted about 100 evacuated residents of the River Community and Camp Williams area back to their homes. Campers were allowed up the canyon Saturday to retrieve tents and other equipment, and rangers planned to collect remaining personal belongings to return to owners.
