Athens to Continue to Haul Storm-Related Green Waste

Representatives of Athens Services, Altadena's trash collection provider, and the county spoke at Tuesday's Town Council meeting to provide additional information on hauling green waste from the wind storms.

If you still have a pile of green waste out in front of your house, and maybe a couple more in your yard, Athens Services and the County have some guidelines for you on how to get rid of it.

Though county officials initially urged people not to haul yard waste from the storm out to their curb, Athens representative Luis Sanchez told the Town Council Athens would continue to haul out green waste without limit as long as it is hauled out correctly.  He noted that Athens has already hauled out about 100 tons of green waste.

Below are the guidelines on what people should and should not do:

  • Bag and Bundle - People should not just haul out piles of waste and expect Athens to pick them up, Sanchez said.  However, any green waste that can be bagged will be hauled away by the provider.  Branches that can be tied and bundled together will also be hauled.  Simply leave those items on the curb.  The general guideline on the size of branch piles it that they should be able to be handled by one person, according to Edel Vizcarra, the planning deputy for County Supervisor Michael Antonovich.
  • No Leaves - Sanchez said that haulers have seen big piles of loose leaves on the side of the road.  Athens will not haul loose piles of leaves - they should be bagged.
  • No Extra Dumping - Both Sanchez and Vizcarra noted that people have been putting bulk trash items on the curb along with piles of green waste.  Neither Athens nor the county will pick those items up - residents should follow the usual procedures for contacting Athens for a special bulk item pick-up.
  • Downed Trees Homeowner's Responsibility - Vizcarra noted that any trees that have fallen in private yards and need to be chainsawed and removed are the responsibility of the homeowner.  The county will continue to remove any debris from street trees.

How has the county's progress on cleaning up the streets of Altadena been?  .
