Contest Aims to Help Keep Bears in the Wild

High school students can win money while helping raise awareness about bears.

Be aware of bears. That is the message the California Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to get out to the public, and they plan to rely on local students for help.

The agency is sponsoring a "Bear Aware" Youth Film Contest. Area high school students will be able to compete by compiling a short film that must include footage about black bears and tips for locals, including information about how to properly dispose of food and garbage that might attract bears to populated areas.

The goal is to keep bears in the wild, according to officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
