How to Take Care of Your Yard Waste

The county will be holding an event where Altadena residents can dispose of green waste from the storm at Farnsworth Park from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Now that the winds have died down and there is a time line on restoring Altadena's power, the next question is what to do with trees and yard waste blown down by the storm.

There are two routes for getting rid of waste.  According to Athens' public affairs department, any customers who would like a second green waste can order one from the company as long as they have only one blue can.  Customers can also bundle up branches, tie them up, and leave them out with the rest of the trash on pick-up days.

For those with too much to clean up, another option this weekend is to bring waste over to Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The county will be collecting yard waste during those times.

For those interested in that option, the county has the following information:

Residents are urged to call their local waste hauler prior to utilizing the service for instructions on how to prepare their tree debris for drop-off.  Proof of residency is required.

Residents are also advised to continue to using their large green waste bins for smaller tree debris and to contact their waste hauler to arrange pick-up of additional excess tree debris on their regular trash collection day.

For further information, residents of county unincorporated communities can also call the county’s trash collection hotline at (800) 993-5844.

Updated: The latest information from Athens is that they will take green waste that is bundled, tied, and left out with cans.  This would provide a way to get rid of branches and palm fronds.

Second Update: Bob Spencer of the Los Angeles County Public Works Department said that the county will be hauling away debris that is on the streets and debris piled up next to it that came from the streets.
