The Los Angeles area was recently awarded a large grant to fund what is being called a nuclear detection halo aimed at protecting citizens in the event of an attack.

The Domestic Nuclear Office of the Department of Homeland Security announced the $11.4 million grant, to detect and prevent and detect a radiological, or nuclear attack, according to information released by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

The grant, called Securing the Cities, will also allow the region to secure $30 million in grants over the next five years, said Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti.
