Officials To Continue Monitoring Program For Criminals

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve an Electronic Monitoring Program as an alternative to incarceration, detention or court sanction for criminals.

The EMP, to be provided by Sentinel Offender Services, will be conducted during an initial 12-month period starting December 1 and ending November 30, 2014. Low to high-risk offenders and/or adult probationers will be subject to the program, according to county documents.

The cost to implement this trial period will reportedly be paid by the participants bing monitored, according to their ability to pay, officials said, resulting in no net cost to the county. This is also contingent  on payment by Sentinel to LA County of a non-refundable administrative fee per individual assessment.

The County has provided similar program by private companies since 1992. Sentinel Offender Services will reportedly offer supervision to participants, regardless of their ability to pay, officials said.

Previous contracts with Sentinel in years past have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to county documents.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
