The City of Pasadena approved a contract this week to begin environmental analysis of a plan to haul sediment out of the Devil's Gate Dam, according to a report in the Pasadena Star-News.
The first phase of the contract will be to analyze the sediment removal, and the second phase will be to evaluate the prospects of using that sediment to expand a sports field in the Sycamore Grove area of the park, according to the Star-News.
Pasadena has long been embroiled in a conflict over whether to build sports fields in the area and in 2010, a sharply-divided Council failed to get the votes to approve three sports fields in the area, leaving just one field in the plan.
Local open space advocates have continually argued against any incursion into open space in the area and have steadfastly opposed the sports fields.
