Pasadena Unified to Hold Joint Meeting With Altadena Town Council on Redistricting Proposal

The meeting will be to address budget issues, and the upcoming PUSD redistricting process

The Pasadena Unified School District Board will hold a joint meeting with the Altadena Town Council on Tuesday to address an upcoming redistricting process that some have described as potentially unfair to Altadena.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the

School district officials are looking into moving from the current at-large election districts where everybody votes for every board member to a vote for their one member.

That could mean that Altadena voters could be divided into separate districts without constituting a majority in any one district, by Altadena Town Council chair Gino Sund at last month's Town Council meeting.

The Town Council is currently looking into who should represent Altadena in the upcoming redistricting process.  They will make recommendations to County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who will be selecting the representatives to a commission that will come up with a redistricting proposal for PUSD voters to vote on in June of 2012.

Antonvich is responsible for appointing two members, the Sierra Madre City Council selects one, Pasadena gets three, and the Pasadena Unified board gets to select three.

A similar measure seeking to establish sub-districts failed in 2000 when Measure BB was rejected by a slim margin.  PUSD board members, who voted to reconsider the redistricting plan, have said that the district could be sued under language in the 2003 California Voter’s Rights Act if it does not at least consider the plan.
