New PUSD Superintendent Selected

Jon Gundry, who has been the interim superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education since 2010, was the unanimous selection of the Pasadena Unified board. The district will now enter into negotiations with Gundry.

The Pasadena Unified School Board has selected Jon Gundry, the interim superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, to be the district's next superintendent.

Gundry served as the deputy superintendent at LACOE since 2008 and was appointed as the interim superintendent in 2010, according to a district press release.

The county department is responsible for direct education of juvenile offenders and special education students in the county, and acts as an intermediary between the state Department of Education and local L.A. County school districts.

Gundry came to the department from the Houston Independent School District in Texas. His tenure there included 12 years as an administrator,  and he ended up serving as an "executive principal overseeing 17 campuses in a high school feeder system," according to the district release.  He was originally a teacher at schools in the district and surrounding areas, according to the release.

The board will now enter into negotiations with Gundry, and assuming they are successful, he will be the next superintendent of PUSD.

Update: Andre Coleman of the Pasadena Weekly writes that in the initial vote, board members Ramon Miramontes, Scott Phelps, and Kim Kenne did not support Gundry.  He also notes that Gundry is fluent in Spanish and had to conduct an interview in Spanish with Miramontes during the hiring process.
