Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Stops by Muir

The long-time Lakers star spoke to kids at the school Monday at an event closed to media. Muir's basketball coach Dr. Gamal Smalley sent the following update.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the intellectual giant and all-time leading scorer in the history of the NBA made a surprise visit to John Muir High School on Monday and shared a preview of his new documentary entitled, "On the Shoulders of Giants". 

Kareem discussed a variety of topics including history, jazz, and shared stories which included the fact that John Muir Alum, Jackie Robinson once wrote him a letter encouraging him to consider attending UCLA as a college choice.

Kareem explained how he was so appreciative of the letter and that his being at Muir was full circle.  Kareem also shared wisdom on the importance of continuing one's education. 

"Do all that you can to polish the diamond, which is you,"  Kareem said.  When Principal Orange acknowledged Coach Smalley to Kareem the most dominate college player ever, six time NBA MVP, six time NBA Champion, and 19 time NBA All-Star, even managed to give the coach a shout out... and of course I was completed stoked for the rest of the day! 
 
The thought provoking visit from one of the greatest players in history and an accomplished author and now filmmaker was an incredible treat filled with encouragement and lessons of humility.  Thanks Capt!
