Loma Alta Teacher First Ever in L.A. County to Win Prestigious Teaching Award

Teacher Lisa Okikawa has won the Broadway League's 2011 Apple Award, a national award that goes to teachers who promote theater to their students.

A school teacher is one of two teachers countrywide to win the Broadway League's 2011 Apple Award, a nationwide theater education award that is given out annually.

Lisa Okikawa, who teaches visually impaired students at the school, is the first ever teacher from the Los Angeles area to win the award, according to the Broadway League's website.  The award has been in existence since 2003.

She will receive her award alongside her students at the opening night of "Les Misérables" at the CTG/Ahmanson Theatre on June 17.

Okikawa has been taking her students to local shows since 2009, according to the Pasadena Unified School District's press release.

Okikawa gives lectures on presentations on  how to teach performing arts and literacy programs to visually impaired students, according to the district.  She also teaches students at the John Marshall Fundamental School.
