PUSD Districting Committee to Meet in Altadena on Tuesday

The committee is developing a proposal to switch Pasadena Unified to an electoral system divided by geographic area.

The Pasadena Unified School District's districting task force, which is working on a potential plan to switch to electing board members from geographic sub-districts, will meet Tuesday night in Altadena.

The committee is working on developing maps of geographic sub-districts that would make board members accountable to specific geographic areas of Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre.

The redistricting process has been underway since January, when the school board to study the issue.

Under the plan Altadena would likely be split into several districts as the town has too many residents to get one stand-alone seat.  Currently, Altadena residents can vote in each board race, as all residents in the district can.

The plan would have to be put before PUSD voters in a special election slated for June 5, 2012,  and its passage by voters is in no way guaranteed. A similar measure seeking to establish sub-districts failed in 2000 when Measure BB was rejected by a slim margin.

Some board members have said that they are studying the plan not because they believe it would be an improvement for voters, but rather out of concern that the district could be sued for a federal voting rights violation for not considering a sub-district electoral plan.

Tuesday's meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Loma Alta school campus.  The agenda is posted at right.
