1940s Finalists Announced for Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class

Bob Chappuis, Harry Gilmer and Charlie Trippi were announced today as finalists from the 1940s for the Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class.

Chappuis set a since-broken total offense record of 279 yards in Michigan's 49-0 victory over USC in the 1948 Rose Bowl.

Gilmer ran for 113 yards on 16 carries and caught a 20-yard touchdown pass in Alabama's 34-14 victory over USC in the 1946 Rose Bowl, the last before the agreement between what are now the Pacific-12 and Big Ten conferences that supplied all the Rose Bowl teams until the 2002 game.

Trippi ran for 130 yards on 25 carries in Georgia's 9-0 victory over UCLA in the 1943 Rose Bowl.

A set of players and coaches representing each decade selected by a committee of members of the Football Writers Association of America will be announced each Sunday throughout the remainder of college football's regular season in connection with the 100th Rose Bowl Game.

The committee will select one representative from each decade for the All-Century Class, which will be announced Dec. 8, along with one player and one coach selected as the greatest in the history of college football's oldest bowl game.
