Muir Baseball Team Gets First League Win Since 2006

Mustangs rally to beat Glendale 10-8 on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon the Muir baseball team partied as if it just won Game 7 of the World Series.

No, the Mustangs didn't clinch a Pacific League title. Nor did the even clinch a berth to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. But given the programs lack of success for much of the past decade, all it took was just a regular win to set off an all-time celebration.

Muir beat Glendale 10-8 on Tuesday for its first Pacific League win since a 9-5 win over Glendale on March 16, 2006. To get the win the Mustangs rallied from an 8-1 deficit to score the final nine runs of the game, five of which came via home runs from senior Sam Hutchins and junior Keon Seymour.

“We came in we got down," said coach Michael Bendy. "We looked like we were going to do the normal thing where we get upset and stop trying to play. The hitting got contagious — kind of like a first for us."

“It kind of was like the World Series where you’re jumping in the pile because like I said it's been ages," Bendy added. "They’ve been waiting for it and normally we’ll get a lead and then we’ll lose it but this time it was in revese so they were happy about the comeback."

Hutchins hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Seymour added a three-run shot in the sixth to key the comeback.

Jeffrey Davis, who led the Mustangs to the second round of playoffs as the team's quarterback in the fall, tossed a complete game to earn the victory.
