Muir Star Kevon Seymour Talks Mustangs' Opener, Recruitment (video)

Muir's season kickoffs off Friday night at San Gabriel.

Altadena Patch got a chance to catch up with Muir senior all-everything playmaker Kevon Seymour before the start of the Mustangs' scrimmage against Birmingham of Lake Balboa on Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs' success largely depends on how Seymour performs on both sides of the ball. The 6-foot, 170-pound gazelle in cleats will split his time between being the Mustangs' No. 1 receiving option and their shutdown corner back.

Seymour, a 4-star recruit according to Rivals.com, is being recruited primarily to play defense, but Seymour told Patch that schools like Cal and UCLA also have discussed lining him up at wideout and returner.

Anyone who watched Muir last year knows that one of the traits that makes Seymour such a tantalizing prospect is his versatility. Seymour can return kicks -- he went untouched on a touchdown return of the scrimmage's opening kickoff Thursday -- he can lineup as a and he'd be an intriguing at tailback if the Mustangs' didn't already have .

The sixth-ranked Mustangs open their season at 7 p.m. Friday when they travel to San Gabriel. One of the key things to look for during the game is new quarterback Josh Washington's ability to get Seymour the ball consistently. Seymour said his timing with Washington is pretty good -- the two have spent extra time after practice working through various routes -- but the big test will see how they perform under the lights.

San Gabriel went 5-5 last year including a 46-12 Week Zero loss at Muir. The Matadors were among the teams receiving votes in the Mid-Valley Division preseason rankings -- but they lost their top running back Arthur Brown (20 total TDs in 2010) to graduation.

Muir coach Ken Howard said San Gabriel is a team that likes to air it out (i.e. throw the ball). That should play out well for the Mustangs considering their strength on defense is their secondary.

Howard and San Gabriel coach Jude Oliva will appear on the Pasadena Star-News' PrepXtra Live on Tuesday at 7 p.m. It'll be interesting to see how the two coaches conduct themselves just days before the season opener.
