Mustangs Stumble in Day 2 of Claremont Passing Tournament

Muir goes 0-2 in tournament play Saturday.

A sour taste came out of Muir after the Mustangs’ abrupt end to their run Saturday in the Claremont Passing Tournament. , Muir fell in both its matchups during the tournament rounds, losing to Northwood and host Claremont.

Their only setback was from their star receiver Kevon Seymour, who did not attend both days of the tournament.

Still, Josh Washington and the rest of the Mustang offense looked promising after day one, outscoring their opponents 70-34 in their three wins. They were also on guard defensively, recording six interceptions in their three wins as well. After a rough start against Northwood in the first round, a slight change in their offense gave them the lead against Claremont 8-0 in the first 20 minutes of their game. Suddenly, the Wolfpack scored on three straight drives, leaving the Mustangs stunned at the end result, a 20-14 loss.

The Mustangs had a decent season last year, finishing 7-5 and losing to eventual finalist Bonita in the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs. Consistency has been the story for the Mustangs though, especially over the summer. They didn’t have any close results in most of their passing league games, which is something that head coach Ken Howard and the rest of the coaching staff have addressed since the beginning of practice. Muir has one more full week of practice until the dead period begins throughout all of CIF.
