Blog: Second Cash Mob

The next Community Cash Mob! Support your community!!!!!

Did you think I was going to forget??

Sorry this is being announced a little late! there has been much to do.I have been setting up a Facebook page, designing logos, posters, etc. I have been on FB for all of two weeks, so it has been a bit of a learning curve for me.

Anyway, here we go...

The August cash Mob will be held this Saturday, July the 28th at Perry's Joint. ALL DAY, no excuses.

Hopefully most people have either been to Perry's, have heard of it, or maybe have just driven by. So Saturday is your chance to either go to Perry's again, or go there for the first time.

Perry's has amazing sandwiches, famous hot dogs, ice cream, root beer floats, they kind of have something for everyone, they even have chai lattes!! It is summer, people! When was the last time you and your kids sat down for a root beer float in a neighborhood joint?

I guess Perry's is exactly what we are trying to promote with Altadena Cash Mobs.

A locally owned business that serves the community it is in. Pretty simple. Not only is it that small restaurant that everyone complains we don't have enough of, but Perry's is constantly hosting community events. Last weeks Coffee With The Captain?? Perry's Joint! They give back, they participate. They are a part of THIS community. They support us, and we need to do the same for them!

Let's really do this! We can let go of all the devisiveness , the arguments, the which side are you on? I have been there for most of the debates, the back and forth. I am not sure I have seen one person change their mind. Everyone pretty much ends up where they started. But we can agree on some things. Hopefully the Altadena Cash Mobs can be one of theem. Let's support our community, our local businesses and the hard working citizens who open those doors every morning.

Let's get together as a community and show them some love!

So head over there to Perry's this Saturday, the 28th. They are open from 10am to 5 pm. When you get there, tell them we sent you!

If you want to learn more about the Altadena Cash Mobs, visit us on Facebook.

Perry's menu and a great interview done with Perry by Muir students are there.

We also would love to hear any feedback and ideas about the cash mobs and ideas for future mobs!

Oh for goodness sakes! I really don't like emoticons, but i suppose i need to start. :) Is there one for sarcasm? Is this it? @@ I am just fine with my choices so far, Websters Fine Stationery, and Perry's. Looking for businesses that support the Altadena community on Lincoln, Lake and Allen. I am positive that every choice will garner a small chorus who will tell me why my choices are wrong. (too succesful, not minority owned, wrong address), there will be more objections as this goes forward. To be completely expected! Again,, i would love citizens who are concerned about this to come on over to the FB page and weigh in, PARTICIPATE !!! Get engaged in your community, DO something! If you don't like how something is being handled, come on in! The more community voices and participation, the better!!! I decided that i was tired of just carping about things and it was time to actually DO something. ( that is a challenge). Next weeks location is being discussed right now!!!!! Altadena Cash Mobs ....facebook See you there!!!!!

Thanks Ninja, We will definitely get to Little Red Hen! I am also wanting to rotate through the different kinds of businesses in our community. Last week a stationery store, this week a restaurant, next week a record store, or a dry cleaners, something not food related. Back around to food, then hardware, then something else. It is really interesting and such a learning curve!!!!! I haven't eaten at Little Red Hen yet, on next weeks schedule! Sounds amazing. These little restaurants are an endangered species!

Hey Erik! You have been over to the FB page, right? I thought i saw your name, or was it here? If not come on over!!!!

Some of these people have a point Terry. You said you're fine with YOUR CHOICES, why are they YOUR CHOICES? Who is choosing the next location and why is this decision up to you? Small chorus or not (seems to be getting larger now anyway) You say the more voices the better but I'm not so sure that you really believe that. When we tell you our opinions you don't seem to be getting it. Keep it in Altadena, it's bad enough that you have to be on some mysterious "list" in order to get mobbed.
Lisa Hastings July 29, 2012 at 03:40 AM
I agree with Lisa! Terry, you are asking for people's input and advice, and then you get sarcastic and make snide comments when people give you their opinions. And now you are telling people to join the facebook group to make their comments. You wrote the article on Patch and now it's not good enough to post comments on Patch. Good grief. I think you should take a break and let someone else who is interested in this project take over.
terry Morris July 29, 2012 at 03:43 AM
Well Lisa, up until now they have been MY choices. Why? Because up until two days ago, no one else has been willing to get involved! You want to run an ongoing weekly event, set up FB pages, design logos and signage, contact various people and stores, write bios, make signs, listen to people complain about how you are doing things??????? Fabulous! This is not a city or county sponsored event, it has all been run on my time and my dime. This has practically been a full time gig for the last 2 weeks. (my husband and kids can attest to that!( I keep saying it, COME ON OVER, log in, don't just sit here and gripe that you don't like the choices that someone else is making, who is also doing all the work. The list is no mystery, it's being discussed by people who actually want to do something. I keep saying it, but no one who is complaining actually wants to get involved. Funny how that works. But all are welcome. You too Lisa!!!!! I would LOVE for you to come over and get INVOLVED.
terry Morris July 29, 2012 at 03:46 AM
Lisa, would you like to take this project on?? Either one of you, I get confused. I think it is a great idea and I am sure my family would as well...
terry Morris July 29, 2012 at 04:14 AM
No one's opinions are devalued because they are on Patch! People who want to actively engage, partcipate and plan need to have a place to do that. Patch is wonderful, but i am not sure that they are willing to allow this site to be the central location for all things having to do with organizing and promoting Cash Mobs .There has to be a place for that. It is open to anyone who wants to be involved in any part of the process. Anyone at all, even those who take issue with how things have been done so far. I m not sure what your agenda is exactly, but I responded to your suggestion that someone else should do this other than myself by asking if you would like to be involved, based logically on your continuing interest in the Cash Mobs. Wishing you peace...
Lisa Maiorana July 29, 2012 at 07:40 AM
If you've had the chance or time to learn a thing or two about writing a BLOG you would know that you are pretty much aloud to write about anything you wish to write about, MOB or no MOB, this arena allows you that forum to do so. I have all the PEACE I need in the world...as does everyone else who opposes you on patch has as well. We just want the right to choose who we want to Mob, when we want at the times we want. We do not need a specific list, time and/or requirement before we do so. I will continue to patronize all of the Altadena owned Mom and Pop shops as I have always done for the past 15 years that I have lived here. I'm sure the "minority" feels the same.

Toto Beauty Supply.

Or the Xel-Ha Salon. They've been there foreeeever, and have introduced a very popular Zumba class in the evenings. Nice looking little salon. Just my two cents!

You know Perry and his wife LIVE IN ALTADENA. They Tutor and mentor kids after a long day of work in their neighborhood. They help network unwed Moms to jobs and they are literally in the first commercial building over the very jagged in that area border. They are part of the Altadena communitya nd were on everybodys short list of places to go. The ROAST BEEF sandwich is fantastic. Proud to support this high quality local business whose owners support and are a part of the Altadena Community.
Steve Lamb July 31, 2012 at 01:24 AM
Lisa M- start your own cash mob and leave alone the people who are doing something. Stop Kvetching and DO SOMETHING.
Revvell July 31, 2012 at 05:06 AM
Oh hell, Stevie and I finally agree on something else. Has hell frozen over yet?

Angela- We have Leslie in our sights, but I am curious about California Bohemian Leather. Do they have a shop? I can't locate them...

I have gone on hiatus from comments on Patch for some time now because I was tired of all the meanness and/or ignorance (that is not directed at everyone, but I don't understand why some people have to act in such a way). But I wanted to say to Terry that I applaud you for taking up such a noble & difficult cause. When you do something that's meaningful, you will have enough critiques & criticisms for a lifetime, but it's funny that those people are the last ones to step in & help with all the hard work. I learned that myself this year when starting up a large program at my daughter's school--the ones who spoke the loudest did the least. It's understandable wanting the mobs to be in Altadena, but whether you knew it or not, it appears this business does put its money into Altadena, even though it may not be through the taxes we are paying. When you take on something so big and time-consuming, there's always a learning curve and the choices you make may not please everyone (as you've learned), but be satisfied that you know everything you are doing comes from a good place and good intent and don't let the naysayers get you down. That doesn't mean that some of the critiques aren't meaningful (as you have certainly agreed), it would be nice if those who don't agree with your decisions could be nicer about it--and perhaps put in some positive support and ideas. And if you don't like it, don't read it, don't participate. Thanks Terry for helping to spotlight our local businesses.

Nina, thank you so very, very much. Your sentiments are incredibly kind, insightful, and most appreciated. l could say so much more but will hope that you know how important your words are. My guess is that someone who can write what you did, will already know without being told. Please know that I believe in this, that it indeed comes from a good place, that I will definitely make mistakes, and that positive input is always welcome. All the rest of it is to be expected. Thanks again, Nina!!
navigio August 01, 2012 at 08:39 PM
Wow Nina, your comment captures my sentiments EXACTLY. Regarding of the question of why people act this way, I tend to equate the curiosity of behavior on the Internet with that of road rage. Humans are social animals and imho, direct, face-to-face social forces act as checks and balances against unreasonable behavior. When we remove those direct social forces but maintain the connection to other humans indirectly, eg over the barriers of cars or the Internet, those checks and balances tend to disappear and without an explicit effort to maintain some perspective or self-check we tend to revert to our most base (unchecked) behaviors, which I believe are also exacerbated by stress or dissatisfaction (and those often manifest in anger). I've often found it curious that both the best and the worst in humans comes out in how we treat other humans. But in thinking about it that's not really that surprising. Perhaps it is even a credit to our species that the most fundamental way in which we judge other humans is just that: how we treat other humans. This may be the very essence of what it means to be social animals, and if so, I am grateful for it (imagine if we did not do that). In the end, the old adage 'it takes all kinds' may just be a different way of saying that the best we can do when we don't like it is lead by example. Your comment achieves exactly that. Thank you!

the marriage proposal still stands.
Nina Malone August 02, 2012 at 12:12 AM
oh Terry, here is Bohemian Leather's FB page and their website. They used to be at the AUFM and they make the most lovely belts--truly works of art, unfortunately, with their instant "fame", their prices went up accordingly (not that they don't deserve what they charge), but they are still mostly below $100 and I'm sure these belts will last forever (unlike anything you'll get at Target). http://www.facebook.com/pages/California-Bohemian-Leather/117963734931041 http://bohemianleather.craftlaunch.com/shop/ And Navigio, hee hee, thanks for your comments. And I DO know why people behave the way they do, it's just so unfortunate and still knocks me on my ass when I read some comments. I think more can get done and points can get across so much better if we do it nicely...the whole honey bit. Nice to hear from you again, and Terry, looking forward to hearing about more local businesses. I've lived here 7 years and didn't know about Perrys, thanks!
Steve Lamb August 02, 2012 at 12:36 AM
Yep Bohemian Leather makes GREAT custom leather goods. And if you've ever done leather work, you cant figure out how the two of them can make it so inexpensively here by hand, but they do!
Lisa Hastings August 02, 2012 at 01:44 AM
All people were saying was that an Altadena business should be featured for the ALTADENA cash mob. You have taken this constructive criticism to a ridiculous level.
Lisa Hastings August 02, 2012 at 01:47 AM
Another suggestion is the Beauty Room on Woodbury. It's a hair salon with fair prices and nice people. In fact, if you look at the directory here on Altadena Patch, Altadena has a lot of small businesses that don't get the attention they deserve. You could just randomly pick from the Altadena Patch Directory. Close your eyes and point your finger and there is the next cash mob!
Lisa Hastings August 02, 2012 at 01:53 AM
Once again, terry asked for suggestions and when people told her that the Altadena Cash Mob should feature Altadena businesses, she got all bent out of shape and misinterpreted this constructive criticism as people being negative. You have taken this entire issue into a different universe, too, as your analysis of people's comments is way overly sensitive and over the top.

Thanks Nina! I have heard about them for years and will add them to the list. If you are on FB (I have been on for two whole weeks!), come visit the Cash Mob site, it's pretty nice so far. I am in trouble, have been back to Perry's twice this week. they have some pretty good hot dogs!!!!!!! BTW, big, big fan of honey...
terry Morris August 02, 2012 at 02:28 AM
that's for Navigo, btw...
terry Morris August 02, 2012 at 02:37 AM
Beauty Room...added! Thanks for the suggestion!! I hadn't heard about them before...
