I am very happy this restaurant opened, and wish the owners great success. I will definitely go…Read More there -- once we get our own business in the black, and have enough of a financial cushion to indulge. Hopefully by our anniversary. That would be nice! Thanks for the detailed reviews to those who have dined there. Very helpful.

What I enjoyed so much about my visit to AltaEats was the fact that the vegetables were delicious!…Read More Healthy too! The quinoa salad made with kale and blood oranges was outstanding as was the Brussell sprouts. The Duck Hash is a phenonmenal dish - we ordered seconds. Good luck Chef Paul and staff. Your restaurant will definitely be a destination point.

I've had the pleasure of eating at AltaEats twice now and am looking forward to the next…Read More visit. So Far the Duck Hash is my favorite with the Lamb Chops a close second.
Small plates are the trend. The customer gets to taste the creativity of Chef Paul's talents and passion for good (make that great) food. Chef Paul and Altadena score a homerun. Best of luck Chef Paul.

I went there Monday evening. The store is small for a supermarket, and a large part of it is…Read More devoted to toiletries and the pharmacy. The shopping carts were smaller than normal. It was not crowded, and the staff were helpful. I brought up the bag issue, and the manager said that the county ordinance provides a grace period for new stores.
I think it is mainly useful if you want to pick up some milk or something from the pharmacy. It is much quicker than Super King.

The produce section was small. Ralphs in Hastings Ranch is my favorite still. Really hard to find…Read More lemongrass around here. Something odd I noticed though was Walmart had the best looking tomatoes. Really huge and red. Not sure if that's good or bad, but they stuck out. Also the bananas looked really good too. They had all of the basics that you would expect, nothing exotic.
They do bag everything in plastic bags. And they didn't charge extra. Not sure how long that will last. I will have to pay attention to more details next time we go.

It was not intended as an attack and in my previous post I apologized for misreading your tone. No…Read More reason why your argument should not appear sophistical to me, just as mine appeared vacuous to you. I did not consider that an attack, but a simple statement of a fact as you see it.
Your current line of reasoning is moving into areas beyond my mental capacity. Let's accept that you see fairness as relative and I see it as a moral imperative. I'll not take up your statement about the "extensive body of laws", as my ignorance in that area will offer little ground for agreement.
Ivan G March 4, 2013 at 05:34 pm
Calling reasoning sophistry is an attack.
Your example is deficient. For example, what if someone…Read More is allergic to citrus pollen? Then the blossoming is unfair to him. Or what if the blossoming detracts bees away from a farmer's field? Then he may consider the blossoms unfair to him. And many people consider mockingbirds to be annoying. Or they may think it unfair that you get to hear the mocking birds but they don't.
You live in your own world of values. Some people share them; some don't. Fairness depends on values. Therefore, it cannot be universally applied as a standard. If it could, we would not have an extensive body of laws.
Christopher Coleman March 4, 2013 at 02:34 pm
Sorry, friend; I mistook your reasoning for wit. However you frame the legal example, the outcome…Read More contradicts the truth and is, therefore, unfair to the person wrongly accused. American jobs are not weighed in a balance against jobs in other countries. Each country is responsible for its own creativity and manufacture. They can choose to trade their products. Basic patriotism dictates that American manufacturers should not use foreign labor, when their fellow Americans need the work. Deportation is an accepted risk when entering another country illegally. No need for society to give free support to individuals who acquire no useful skills; we should require work in exchange for public assistance. Even unemployment benefits could be a wage for a certain number of hours of work. It is also time for us to think unsentimentally about children, unwanted or not. .However, all people in need in our society did not bring their troubles on themselves. We can find ways to help them that also help society.
" Everything that happens to someone is unfair in some way". Demonstrably untrue. Example: the perfume of citrus blossom is now on the air, as are the sounds of mocking birds. Both happen to me. Both please me. I detect nothing unfair to me or anyone else.
Our actions make beneficiaries of some people and can make victims of others. This is a moral issue. A philosophy that includes an awareness of this is morally productive

I went to the store last night. It is rather small (smaller than the Ralphs on Lake). It has small…Read More shopping carts. There were not many customers, but the employees were friendly and helpful. I wouldn't use it for food shopping except when I need to pick up something like milk or soda.

Your post is very thoughtful, Tracey Hutson. I appreciate your concerns; I also appreciate that you…Read More minimize your shopping at Walmart because of their business practices, and that you want people to have resources available to them. What concerns me most is that Walmart is a major contributor to the increasing divide between "haves" and "have nots." They have helped to create the depressed economy, and they benefit from the depressed economy (as you noted--1200 people applying for 65 jobs). I don't have a lot of money, and I do understand trying to make ends meet. My husband and I are both self-employed in fields that aren't very busy right now, with a little social security for me. Still, we are more comfortable than a lot of folks, and we don't have children to feed. I don't want to deny anything to people who have less; I want to make choices that help lift them up to a higher standard of living. I've been there! and when I was, it was the small business owners who helped keep me afloat. I'd like to think that some purchasing pressure on a company that relies on the taxpayers to subsidize their employees (in spite of the fact that the six owners control more than 42% of the country's wealth) might help. I know of no other way to apply pressure to get them to improve their business practices; they already seem to own congress. If we truly let "free market" be the deciding force, we may soon be back to the days of the Company Store

91104 south of NY Drive, from Altadena Drive to Lake and, for the most part, north of Washington is…Read More Altadena ...it just has a pasadena address. But there is House of Cookies which was not above a 90. By the way, Armen's got a 90 which is only one point above a B and House of Basturma only got a 91 so to me that is a bit concerning. Thanks for checking though!

Daily Kos is hardly a neutral source, and you misstate what the article says. ("As many as 80…Read More percent of workers in Wal-Mart stores use food stamps.") The article provides no substantiation for what it says.
From what I have read, employees of other companies also receive government assistance. This is not surprising, because retailing jobs in general do not pay well, and many of the jobs are part-time. Walmart is simply the largest retailer.
And, as a good progressive, princess, don't you think that people should take advantage of the government benefits available to them? Would the taxpayers be better off if these people were not employed at all?
Mike Roberts February 4, 2013 at 05:15 pm
How do you figure a larger walmart will go on Lake? You mean bigger by 2,000sqft? The puzzle is…Read More knowing what the community wants. One one side you have groups who don't want it cuz they philosophically disagree with the biz model but don't do anything to recruit other retail to the area. So, we have what we have. Stalemate.
Tired of hearing the whining about why certain groups don't like Walmart. Is that enough to keep it out of town? Philosophical distaste from some in town? Where were ya'll when check cashing, liquor stores & nails salons were popping up? Now they're grandfathered in.
