A shopping center on Lake Avenue shows the continued neglect of the best piece of retail real estate in Altadena.
Apparently we may see a few changes at the northwest corner of Altadena Drive and Lake. A very few changes. If you access the property owner’s remodeling plans for these two or three blighted acres – also known as the Rite Aid slum -- it might come as a surprise to find that, though no work has started, the project is scheduled for 2011. The clock, as they say, is ticking. Surprised, that is, until you see the actual scope of the redesign. I figure the construction crew could start and finish the project on New Year’s Eve and still have time to shave, shower, and hit an afternoon party. According to the design graphic posted on the remodeling plan, it appears the owner intends to make a few modest additions -- a new sign and a few trees. …

A late night car crash into a light police at Lake Avenue at Loma Alta has SoCal Edison crews working to repair the damage.
A group of teenagers crashed a Dodger Charger into a light pole right outside the Cobb Estate at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Loma Alta Boulevard early Friday morning, according to Officer Christian Cracraft of the California Highway Patrol. Around midday Friday, multiple SoCal Edison trucks and workers were gathered around the pole working to fix the pole and restore power. According to the information on the SoCal Edison website, 99 customers are without power while the repairs are being done (they are expected to be completed late Friday afternoon). As shown in the attached pictures, the pole has a deep crack in it. The bumper of the car was also still laying on the ground next to the pole as of 1 p.m. on Friday. Cracraft said …

A female victim was reportedly assaulted by a man who shoved her into some bushes and exposed himself on Sunday evening, according to police.
A male attacker hit a woman exiting a Blockbuster Video on Lake Avenue Sunday night, then pulled her towards some bushes and exposed himself, according to Lt. Jacobs of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The crime was first reported in the Pasadena Star-News, which described it as an attempted rape. The attacker exited the scene right after the attack after he noticed onlookers in a nearby car, Jacobs said. The Star-News reports that the department are looking to get more information from the victim in hopes of creating a sketch of the attacker to help track him down. Check back with Patch for more as the story develops.

The project will change Lake Avenue above Altadena Boulevard from a four-lane street to two lanes with a center turning lane and wider shoulder.
The county has started work on transforming the top of Lake Avenue from a four-lane road to a two-lane road with a center turn lane and wider shoulders. The preliminary marking work has been started as of Tuesday and the work will be wrapped up by October 5, according to an email from Jalaine Madrid, the project's director. The idea behind the changes is to reduce the risk of collisions on left turns, reduce overall traffic speed, and increase pedestrian safety, according to a letter sent out to Altadena homeowners (which can be viewed on right). Though the county did not list any specific incidents or statistics on accidents in the area, there is at least one recent example of a nearby accident, where a driver collided with a cyclist …

In an update to a collision between a car and a cyclist that happened last Monday, CHP officials tell Patch the driver was at fault in the accident.
An accident last week involving a driver and a cyclist happened when the driver was making a left turn from Lake Avenue onto Pine Street and struck the cyclist, according to Officer Tom Miller, of the California Highway Patrol's Altadena Station. Miller said the driver was waiting to make the left turn as vehicle traffic passed by. The cars heading down south may have obstructed his view of the bike. When the cars cleared, the driver went to make a left turn and collided with the cyclist, who was heading southbound on Lake. The biker's front wheel was damaged and he was thrown from the bike, Miller said. The cyclist complained of pain in the hips and he was transported to Huntington Hospital. Miller said he does not know the outcome of …

Altadenans are usually laid-back people until you push a hot button, then they come out in droves in support or denial of what is precious to them.
It’s the strangest thing trying to figure out the temperament of a community. You never quite know what exact button is to push before the community gets excited about things. Whether it is for pain or pleasure getting a bead on this town is not always easy. What do the majority of Altadenans care about enough that would to inspire them actively participate? Where are the hot buttons that would motivate the masses? Although there are a few trends, not many grow to the level of rallying the troops to make changes. Back during the 1960s there were many issues to fight. The majority of people were so dissatisfied with the status quo that they were willing to come out and show their disdain. It didn’t take much to get people motivated. Even …
