On the article What Questions Do You Have for Assembly Candidates?

ReplyGov. Brown seems for the Bullet Train from San Diego to San Francisco. My feeling is, let's be all-in or all-out. If we are all in, then let's get the funding, as required by the Proposition we passed. If not, let;s get the highways fixed so we can motor-on. Let's hear from the candidates. Do you support the Bullet Train or not.

On the article Poll: What's Your Favorite Christmas Movie?

Reply"Holiday Inn", the 1942 film with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire introduced Irving Berlin's song, "White Christmas", an Academy Award winner. Crosby breaks up an act with Astaire to open an inn in Connecticut that is only open on holidays, presenting shows. That sets the stage for many Berlin tunes and production numbers. The centerpiece of the movie occurs when the inn opens on New Years Eve and Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds (Mrs. Murdock and Mrs. Gregory on "Leave it to Beaver") since "Happy Holiday" in a scene shot on Hollywood's largest indoor set--still in use today. The winter scene is truly a wonderful piece of cinema art. The enitre picture is a holiday delight.

On the article Residents: 'Worst Santa Ana Winds in Recent Memory'

ReplyIn January of 2003 a similar Santa Ana event hit the area. The South Arcadia area was especially hard hit. 29 utility poles were downed in winds that mesured over 70 mph, according to a study of the event by the San Diego Weather Service Office of the NWS. Wire were strewn in the streets like limp spaghetti. Power was out in the area from Santa Anita Ave. to Sixth Ave. for weeks. Edison offered generators to residents while the public utility repaired the damage. Concrete poles replaced the old wooden posts.

ReplySince I wrote the piece on Dick Williams I discovered a January, 1944 Elioteer Senior Edition that confirms Williams attended Eliot Jr. High (Now Eliot Middle School). Williams is listed as part of the starting lineup for the "A" Team basketball squad. Williams and Pete Orwall were forwards; Don Abbott was center; guards were Jim Baker and Fred Aberle.--Bill Peters

ReplyThanks to everyone for the comments on the article about the changed conditions of the Upper Arroyo trail. Additonal thanks to Lisa Hasting for posting pictures. An apology from me to Ken Mallory, founder and leader of the Arcadia Ridge Rovers, who took the pictures that appear with the article. To John Emanueli who is seen in one of Mallory's pictures balancing across the stream: you were right. My spell check did not know the difference between "sign" and "sing".

Laura - I think party affiliation is quite important as it tells voters a state-office holder's general bent. I believe you are incorrect that in an Open Primary that candidates do not need to list party affiliation. On the California Secretary of State website is the following:
"Candidates for voter-nominated office must indicate their party preference or lack of party preference on Primary and General Election ballots."
The sample ballot tells you their preference.
