UPDATED, 12:42 p.m.: The injured hiker was flown to Huntington Memorial Hospital in serious condition, according to Lise Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department. The hiker reportedly fell off the side of the canyon and into a ravine adjacent to Coyote Canyon.

"He required some pretty intensive medical intervention in the field before he was able to be transported," Derderian said.

The hiker reportedly suffered from a punctured lung, in addition to having low blood sugar. According to Derderian, the man was conscious enough after the fall to dial 911 with his cell phone. Rescue teams sounded whistles and dispatchers would listen to the open line and coordinate with teams to determine if authorities were closing in.

"They needed to secure his neck before they transported him," Derderian said. "His condition wasn't looking too good as of about an hour ago."

Coyote Canyon is an area accesible from the Eaton Canyon Nature Center and other trails in the area.
