5 Things: Cue McKenzie, Altadena Heritage Garden Awards

Upcoming important local news stories and events.

1)  Altadena Heritage is holding its .  The awards honor the best gardens in Altadena and help raise funds for the Altadena Heritage organization, which helps preserve Altadena natural beauty and history.  The event will include wine, tea, and food, all in a garden setting at the home of a local artist. Tickets, which are $15 for members and $25 for the general public, can be purchased at the organization's website.

2) Cue McKenzie, a long-time Altadena resident and a former member of the Altadena Town Council passed away on May 5.  According to an obituary for McKenzie, written by Francis Dyer, she was an avid horseback rider, a member of the , and a hard-working community volunteer who helped to develop Loma Alta Park into what we know it as today.  Her full obituary is attached to this article.  A memorial service will be held on May 20 at 1 p.m. at Altadena Baptist Church.

3) The is honoring , for his 75th birthday on .  Yes, the event organizers say, it is quite likely he will do some reading and tell some stories at the event.

4) The Altadena Chamber of Commerce will be releasing the results of a survey on local shopping habits that we had a in an .  The survey was designed by several local merchants with the intent of finding out what kind of businesses Altadena residents would like to see in town.

5) There is all kinds of news up on the Facebook page of the Altadena Urban Farmer's Market, which will be held on May 29 this month.  The farmer's market will include heritage breed chickens,  and organic goat cheese from an Ontario farm.  There is also a local food and gardening picnic event planned for the Altadena Community Gardens on June 18.  Check out the page for more details.
