Altadena's Coyote Problem

At Tuesday's Town Council meeting, a representative from the county asked residents to take precautions against feeding coyotes and to call in "problem" coyotes that loiter.

Ellen Walton, a representative from the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner/Weights & Measure Department, gave a short presentation on the coyote problem in Altadena at last night Town Council meeting.

The problem, she said, is not that coyotes are present—it's that they're growing accustomed to residents that feed them regularly. The department is looking for "problem" coyotes that are suspected of .

Walton has been surveying residents to find out what is causing the problem. She heard that one resident was feeding coyotes, because she "feels sorry for them."

Walton warned residents not to feed them and to take precautions to secure their trash cans and not leave pet food outside.

She also asked that residents call in coyotes that linger and seem to have lost their fear of humans—these could be the problem coyotes the agency is looking for.
