Black Bear Spotted in Sierra Madre

A few days after bears were spotted in Altadena, a Sierra Madre Patch reader found this big bear in her yard.

Patch user snapped this photo from her bedroom window last Friday evening in northern Sierra Madre. Love first mentioned the sighting while commenting on a recent Patch story about a in Sierra Madre.

Here’s a look at Emily’s original comment:

“We live at the top of Baldwin and have had a mama and baby bear in mine, and in our neighbors yards almost daily for over a week now. Some of our neighbors felt they would only come out when it was dark, but I had one run across my driveway while still light out. I did get a photo of one of them from my bedroom window, so I can send it out. Anyway, just wanted to everyone to be aware they are hanging around.”

In May, some foothill residents took part in a forum in which Lieutenant Marty Wall of the California Department of Fish and Game shared several precautionary tips for bear-proofing your home.

For those concerned about living in the urban-wildlife interface zone, Wall offered some advice.

“Prevention is the key. You need to stop the reason the bears are venturing down,” Wall said. “You need to make you house less desirable than your neighbor’s house. The bear will always take the easiest path in life.”
