Get Into the Best Local Museums for Free

Every month, these popular and prestigious area museums offer special admission-free days to the general public. We've picked five of the top museums and the dates you can get in for free.

Pasadena

Enjoy the many priceless works of art on the walls and displays at Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum without paying a price. The first Friday of every month, the museum offers free admission to patrons from 6p.m.-9p.m. A great way to spend a Friday evening with friends, a loved one, or the perfect first date. Roam the halls and see works by Picasso, Matisse and Monet, to name a few. The facility is sectioned off by time periods from 14th century European art to modern and contemporary works.

Come see over 14,000 kinds of plants in a dozen gorgeous gardens at the Huntington Botanical Gardens as well as the library and art collections’current selection of over 6 million texts in the form of books, manuscripts and other American and British works that span from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Permanent works displayed include: a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on vellum, a vast collection of the early editions of Shakespeare's works and the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Admission is free the first Thursday of the month. Reservations are required and the free tickets can be requested by phone at 800-838-3006 or online here.

LACMA

Los Angeles

LACMA opens its doors sans charge every evening after 5p.m. The museum is also free all day the second Tuesday of every month. See the current exhibitions, like Human Nature: Contemporary Art from the Collection, which encompasses the usual paintings, drawings and sculptures along with video and photography mediums. If you go on Friday evenings, you just may be able to catch a live music show or watch a flick all for free. This is the perfect date spot.

Natural History Museum

Los Angeles

Get hands on and see what it’s like to be a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum. At the Age of Mammals exhibit, browse life-sized fossils and taxidermy specimens of Cheetahs, Zebras and more. The exhibit features a total of 240 specimens, including 38 articulated mammal skeletons. This is the perfect place to bring the kids as the museum also offers with story time sessions, hands-on exhibits, and live animals. Admission is free the first Tuesday of every month.

The Autry

Los Angeles

Learn about our Western heritage at The Autry through exhibits, theatre and special events. Currently on display is The Art of Native American Basketry, showcasing several hand-woven baskets. At the end of the month, the Skydreamers exhibit, showcasing dozens of the first photographs taken from sky level, will be on display to teach patrons just how majestic and world-opening these photos were in learning about our geography. The Autry museum is free the second Tuesday of every month.
