Preparing for an Emergency

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department offers tips to help you stay safe.

It pays to have a plan. So say officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and yesterday's magnitude-4.7 earthquake that was centered in Riverside County and felt in some parts of Los Angeles serves as a reminder.

There were no reports of damage as a result of yesterday morning's earthquake centered about 12 miles from the town of Anza, according to the United States Geological Survey.

However, officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Altadena Station say there are steps you can take now to stay safe in the event of any future earthquake or other disaster.

They recommend making emergency plans in case evacuations from a home or a business are necessary.

Assembling an emergency kit that contains enough water, food, flashlights, a radio with batteries and a first aid kit to last for at least a week is also high on the list. It is recommended that locals should stay informed about any emergency updates, including those broadcast by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department via television and radio stations as well
