Christmas Tree Lane Traditional "Lights Up" Event

Christmas Tree Lane Association President Maureen Ward and local residents have started the mile long stretch of lighting the Deodars trees down Santa Rosa Avenue.

Christmas TreeLane, which runs down Santa Rosa Ave between Woodbury Ave and Altadena Drive, has been a tradition in Altadena since 1920. Christmas tree lane consists of 150 Deodars trees, and collectively is takes about 10,500 lights to do the job.

Volunteers are something they welcome from residents and non-residents.  The process of lifting these lights is not so much physically strenuous but mostly time consuming.

"What we need is everyone in the community that wants to keep this tradition alive to come and help," Ward said. "What we are looking for are parents and children to come out and do a little work and in the process meet their neighbors.

The undertaking of prepping these trees to be lit by December 11th does not seem like a job at all when speaking to local volunteers.

"What I love the best about it is the friendships I have made here," said twelve year volunteer and local resident Steve Elliot. "It's a lot fun spending time with your friends and neighbors, sharing your lives and forming a family"

All in all, association members and volunteers will dedicate their Saturday and Sunday mornings throughout the months of October and November from 9am to 12pm to keep this tradition alive.

"Everyone meets at 9am," Ward said. "We not only provide each volunteer with coffee and donuts in the morning, but we traditionally finish of the day having lunch at our house so volunteers get to know each other and build friendships."

Volunteers are welcome to come out and give any time to these dedicated residents. Christmas tree lane will be officially lit on December 11th with its traditional lighting ceremony and remain lit thru January 7th.
