Updated: Burned Body Found in Altadena

Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding a burned body found Sunday morning.

Updated 1 p.m: A red Mazda sedan (pictured at right) at the scene has been towed away be investigators.

The body has been removed from the scene by the Coroner's Department, and investigators are beginning to leave the scene. A small circle of people was seen praying at a street corner near the scene.

"We just needed to pray for this man," said resident Raequel London.

Updated 11:37 a.m: Long-time residents of the neighborhood around Windsor told Altadena Patch Sunday morning they have not not seen any significant problems with violent crime in the area.

"No, not at all don't let anybody say that," said senior citizen Helen Walker, an area resident who had come out to the crime scene.

She said it is a very friendly neighborhood.

"There are kids down the street who come by all the time to visit me," Walker said.

Resident Virginia Heredia echoed those sentiments.

"It's very unusual....all our kids grew up here and it's always been very quiet," Heredia said.

Detectives have not yet said whether the body was dumped in the neighborhood or whether the death of the person actually happened there.

So far, none of the residents who spoke with the Patch reporter on scene have said they heard or saw anything related to the crime.

Updated 10:55 a.m:  Lt. Matt Burson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the detective on the scene, told media that the victim has been identified as an adult black male, but because of the extent of the burning, it will take some time to make a positive identification of the person.

Burson said the bystander who found the body had thought it was trash burning on the sidewalk and went to investigate.  It appears that when that passerby arrived on the scene, the victim was already dead.

However, he said that the coroner's department does not yet know whether the victim was dead when he was set on fire or not.  The cause of death is still unknown.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau investigators at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

Updated 10:42 a.m: Detectives and coroners are at the scene and are looking at a maroon sedan that is parked on the block.

The victim is an adult male, according to a release from the Sheriff's Department, and his body was found on a sidewalk.

No word yet on whether the crime is related to shootings that took place on Thursday and Friday.

Original: Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the death of a person whose body was found burned outside in the 2600 block of Windsor Avenue in Altadena early Sunday morning.

It has not been determined if the burning was the victim's cause of death, according to Sgt. Randy Tuinstra of the Sheriff's Department, who added the call came in at around 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

There was no information on suspects available.

Check back with Patch for more details on this story later in the day.

Thank you for letting us know, Redmond. Much appreciated.
Joll Lee April 16, 2012 at 05:17 AM
Seeing as how Big Killer Rob is dead, and has been for quite some time, I highly doubt it was him... As for his brother, Baby Killer Rob, he doesn't even live in the state any longer, and wouldn't come back at risk of ending up like his brother.. As for the Pasadena Denver Lanes.... Well, who knows?! But lets not going pointing fingers at people who couldn't possibly be associated with such a heinous crime. This is a sad and horrible incident, and just one of many that have been occurring lately. Lets focus on bringing back the quality to Altadena, and its surrounding neighborhoods. You cant get rid of the garbage, unless you are willing to take it out!

So how do we go about having a community meeting to address all this. More police presence near active areas like Loma Alta park would send a clear message that we care and will not tolerate this type of violence.

ac - You can contact your Altadena Town Council rep and ask them to hold a meeting: http://altadenatowncouncil.org/. The Town Council is meeting tomorrow at 7 p.m. and the new station Captain, John Benedict, should be there. Discussing a community meeting there would make sense. There is also the Altadena Coalition of Neighborhood Associations, which recently put out a request for people to suggest topics for their next meeting: http://patch.com/A-sz7z

True Freedom April 16, 2012 at 07:28 PM
ABC protect the city. Now that's a good one. In "protecting the city", they stir up more dust than they settle. You see, revenge begets revenge and the cycle continues. Don't be a Zimmerman... let the cops do their job.
daprinceofalta April 16, 2012 at 09:11 PM
THE COPS DONT DO THEIR JOBS ITS NOT ONE MURDER IN ALTADENA THAT HAS BEEN SLOVED AND I DOUBT UF THIS ONE WILL BE
Name Withheld April 16, 2012 at 09:13 PM
Gotta love how the gang contingent jumped on this story right away and made their opinions known. I think at this point it is a safe bet to say that this brutal death was gang-related.
daprinceofalta April 16, 2012 at 09:15 PM
IM THE ONLY TALVIN IN ALTADENA THE ONLY PERSON THAT I KNOW NAME TALVIN ALL IN ALL

True Freedom April 16, 2012 at 09:41 PM
So Talvin, if you indeed are not affiliated with a gang, then how would you know this crime was not gang affiliated? By the way, you know why alot of murders are not solved? Because of that ridonkulous code of silence known as "no snitchin'" People see things, hear things, but if they don't pass the info on to the police, how would you expect them to do their job?
ac April 16, 2012 at 10:05 PM
Wow... it's hard to believe were talking about the beautiful altadena I live in. Maybe i'm wrong since, to be honest, I can't seem to make up what most of the "text talk" says.
Dream keeper April 16, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Wow, I love all the feed back and the passion. I agree with True Freedom, the term GANG and in and of itself brings negativity. If the gang wants to protect me then they need to become Police, Detectives, Neighborhood watch etc. I had friends that were from ABC and their intention was to "protect their turf" but they weren't protecting anything as much as they were their ego and needs to be "hard". It all just results in more chaos and drive by shooting. Just because they were nice at times does not mean that they were innocent of wrong doing. @Daprinceofalta, if you are gonna be so passionate about something be passionate about the right thing. Sounds as if you are speaking from emotion and not logic. @Joll Lee, it's not finger pointing but merely ruling out all possible suspects. And just a question, why couldn't they be capible of such a heinous crime? Lets be for real. Sounds like you are speaking from emotion to. I hope to God this has nothing to doing with anyone from ABC or PDL. Enough is enough. "Gang bangin' is so played out". I said it then to my friends and family that take part in identifying themselves that way and I say it now. May the victims family find peace and may justice be served.
daprinceofalta April 17, 2012 at 02:46 AM
NO IM SPEAKIN FROM THE HEART AND FROM WHAT I KNOW I WILL NOT BECOME A COP YALL JUST DONT KNOW THEIR THE ONES THAT KEEP THINGS GOING GONE INTO THE MINDS OF GANG MEMBERS IT GOES DEEPER THEN WHAT U THINK AND PPL IN ALTADENA DONT TALK 2 THE POLICE CAHZ THE PDL'S WORK WIT THE POLICE CAHZ THEY BE HAVING CASES AND THEY JUST START TELLIN BUT TRUTH BE TOLD I ONLY JUMPED ON HERE CAHZ SOMEONE IS USING MY NAME TALVIN AND ME IS NO SNITCH LOL
Steve Lamb April 17, 2012 at 03:36 AM
Obviously, Governor Browns early release of criminals in order to balance the State budget is having the affect of returning gang members to their old neighborhood. All of California will be forced to pay the price so State employees can still be overpaid, underworked and pensioned beyond all belief.
True Freedom April 17, 2012 at 06:02 PM
@Steve: you're right. It's a power play by the gov to get people to vote for raising taxes. Instead of finding sane places to cut, like pensions, benefits and entitlement programs, he releases his "henchmen" on us to bully us into ponying up more dough for his union supporters. R
Shangri-La April 18, 2012 at 06:06 AM
Hi Guys- just want everyone to realize that gang violence is what THE MAN wants minority champion warriors to embrace because it keeps all of us "little people" from uniting and overpowering corrupt leadership (the greedy corporate super-wealthy). Just sayin'.
True Freedom April 18, 2012 at 05:34 PM
Ok, that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. BTW- where's Elvis living and who shot JFK?
Steve Lamb April 18, 2012 at 07:01 PM
Yep. We have public employee salaries that are 30% higher and more than equivalent private sector wages and pensions that are 300% and up at fewer years service than the private sector. Instead of cutting there, the violent are being released into the public to make us fear to the point we will raise our taxes so the overpaid can collect outrageous retirement. Could not agree with you more!
Steve Lamb April 18, 2012 at 07:03 PM
I agree with this also and BTW True Freedom- we know who shot JFK- it was a team of assassins who were CIA employees connected with the bay of pigs operation and E. Howard Hunt said so on his death bead while he was being tape recorded. The case is really closed, and it was who Garrison said it was, all along.
Lisa Hastings April 18, 2012 at 10:02 PM
This is very sad.
Donna October 11, 2012 at 08:11 AM
T his is very sad how can they now say its a suicide
Lovely Altadena October 18, 2012 at 09:29 AM
Donna, apparently from evidence at the scene along with interviews of the deceased's family/friends and evidence at his home the coroner was able to make this determination. There was also a witness. It's sad, seems like a tough way to go.
Abraham Watts January 10, 2013 at 02:24 AM
And you jerks blamed it on the crips who haven't stirred up trouble in years and have stated they want to help the community.
