Updated: Fire Breaks Out on West Mendocino Street

A house fire broke out at a Friday morning at 31 W. Mendocino Street, and one local woman was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, according to Fire Department officials.

The department received the call for the fire at 11:34 a.m., according to Capt. Funke of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Sheriff's Department deputies on the scene said the fire started in the garage and spread to the rest of the home.

A 51-year-old woman, who was a neighbor of the home where the fire occurred, was hospitalized following the incident, according to Funke.

Investigators later determined the cause of the fire was not storm related, according to Capt. Ronald Mandzok of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Firefighters were called back to the neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. by neighbors who saw smoke coming from the home, Mandzok said.  Firefighters on the scene then determined that insulation in the house was still smoldering, the heat driven on by winds that picked up in the area during the afternoon.

Following the original incident, neighbors and others in the area had gathered on the block, which was clogged up with several fire engines.

Richard Andrade, a local contractor, said he had been working at the home shortly before the fire broke out.  He said he had taken off to go to lunch at the Little Red Hen, which is right around the corner, which is where he was when he heard about the fire.

Andrade told Patch he had $15,000 to $20,000 of tools in the home.  He had been doing work on the house for the last four months, he added.
