Inmate Release to Begin for Altadena, County, State

Lt. Joe Dempsey of the Altadena Sheriff's Station told the Altadena Town Council on Tuesday that two early-release inmates from Altadena are back in town and the department expects more.

Two state inmates that are part of the wave of upcoming early release prisoners have returned to Altadena in recent weeks, according to Lt. Joe Dempsey of the Altadena Sheriff's Station.

The and constitute cruel and unusual punishment by endangering prisoners' health and safety. The court's ruling upheld a California District Court decision made by a three judge panel that ordered the state to release between 38,000 and 46,000 prisoners in the next two years.

So far, according to Dempsey, 300 inmates have been released in Los Angeles County.  He said that officers do not yet know how many will be released in Altadena over the next two years, but are looking to find out.

As Los Angeles County is the biggest county in the state, it stands to reason a substantial percentage of the inmates will be released here - Monrovia Police Chief Jim Hunt told the Monrovia City Council (as ) that he has been told that the estimate is that about 10,000 inmates will be released early into the county in the next year.

Dempsey told the Town Council Tuesday that department outreach to help inmates adjust to life outside of prison would be an important part of dealing with the issue.  He said that the department will be holding an outreach event to help any local ex-felons with employment issues, tatto removal, and STD testing, and more.
