Searchers today rescued a hiker who got lost in the Echo Mountain area of the Angeles National Forest.

Daniel Marine of El  Segundo, believed to be in his mid-20s, was hiking in the Echo Mountain area of the Angeles National Forest on Sunday afternoon when he lost his way, said Sgt. Rudy Sanchez of the sheriff's Altadena Station.

"At about 8:30 p.m., the hiker used his cell phone to call and tell us he was all right but lost," Sanchez said.

Members of the Altadena and Crescenta Valley search-and-rescue teams deployed in the area and looked for the man all night, he said. They made voice contact with him at 4:45 this morning.

"They shouted at him and he shouted back," Sanchez said. "He's alive and well, although probably a little cold."

The hiker was airlifted to safety about two hours later.

Marine told deputies that he had parked his car on Loma Alta Drive in Altadena at 3 p.m. He set out with few supplies and no flashlight. Shortly after his first call, his cell phone battery died, but deputies were able to get a read of his last location from the cell phone provider.

The sergeant reminded hikers to let people know where they are going and to return before sundown because it is easier to get lost and injured in the darkness.

About two dozen rescuers combed the area looking for him. High winds limited the use of helicopters.
