Proposed Palm Street School to Get New Hearing December 6

The operator of the Arcadia-based Arroyo Pacific Academy, who wants to start a new private high school in Altadena, has changed some of the plans for the school after having it rejected by the Town Council and Land Use Committee.

The proposal to put a private high school on Palm Street has been scheduled to receive an additional hearing from the Altadena Town Council Land Use Committee on December 6.

The Town Council voted in September against the Arcadia-based Arroyo Pacific Academy's receiving a permit to bring a new campus to Altadena at 183-205 Palm Street. While the ultimate decision will be made by the County Planning Department, input from the Town Council is often weighed heavily in making planning decisions.

According to Philip Clarke, the director of Arroyo Pacific Academy, the school is now only seeking permission to have a maximum capacity of 200 students, rather than 250.  He has also announced that the school now has a new traffic circulation plan to help alleviate concerns over traffic on the narrow, residential street.

The meeting has been scheduled as a stand-alone hearing for the school at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Altadena Community Center.  Holding a single meeting to devote to the issue could allow more people who want to be heard on the issue to speak: at the September Town Council meeting, the number of speakers was limited to three on each side of the issue, even though dozens had submitted cards to speak.
