Three Farmers' Markets in Altadena?

Despite the new Saturday farmers' market at Sacred Heart Church, the Altadena Town Council has asked county officials to continue to pursue a farmer's market at Loma Alta Park. The market could be set up in the next month or so.

Despite the recent formation of a , the Altadena Town Council voted to continue the process of trying to set up a new market at the on Tuesday night.

If that market were established, that would give Altadena three: those two, along with the monthly .

Al Evans of the County Parks and Recreation Department, who briefed the Council on the market, said in an interview after that the market could be established in the next month or so.

He said he would be looking for a market manager and expects to come back to the Town Council meeting next month with a candidate.  At that point, he said, he hopes to get community input on when the market should meet, how often it should meet, what kind of vendors it should have, and any other suggestions community members might have.

The County Parks and Recreation Department had been attempting to set up a market for months.  The original plan was to put it at , though after some community objection, the site proposal was moved to Loma Alta.

In the meantime, the group the county had been hoping to contract with started a private Saturday market at , which has now met twice.

Gino Sund, the head of the Town Council, said based on what he had heard, the new Saturday market is "small" and has "little variety," a complaint some have made on this site as well.

He said the Town Council has a "lot invested in the process" of developing a farmers' market at Loma Alta.

The Council voted unanimously to ask the County Parks and Recreation Department to continue to pursue the market.

Evans said his department will look into options for subcontractors to run the market and would be open to having the same people who run the Sacred Heart market as the organizers if they are interested.

Sund said he would also like to see if the monthly Altadena Urban Farmer's Market can be integrated into the new market as well.

He said that he had received almost universally positive communications from the public about a market at Loma Alta, with one resident concerned with the impact on the park.

Evans said that the only impacts would be during the set-up process when vendors would use a dirt trail to get to the pavilion at Loma Alta where the market would be held.  The vendors would then park in the parking lot, not in any grassy area, he said.
